Organised to mark the publication of the latest issue of Transbordeur. Photography, History, Society, this round table examines the relationship between photography and ecology as understood in multiple ways: ecology as an interdisciplinary science which has sought a global understanding of the environment since its emergence in the 19th century; ecology as a specific agenda within political and activist movements that emerged with the rise of public awareness of environmental issues in the second half of the twentieth century; ecology as the object of social and philosophical movements which question the binary opposition of nature and culture in Western society; and finally the ecological impact of the photographic industry through its dependence on extraction, petrochemical derivatives, and more recently digital technologies.
By bringing together participants from the fields of geography, ethnography, the history of photography and artistic practice, this round table aims to question the many histories and meanings of this relationship and to examine the different ways in which it can be understood.
With Aline Bovard Rudaz (artist), Teresa Castro (Université Sorbonne Nouvelle), Brenda Lynn Edgar (MEG) and Estelle Sohier (UNIGE). Moderated by Olivier Lugon (UNIL).
This event is part of the first Swiss Photomonth, which runs from 30 August to 6 October 2024.
