This two-day workshop offers an introduction to the conception and production of an exhibition, and aims to provide concrete and actionable working methods and references. It is addressed at artists and photographers who are considering exhibiting their own photographic work and want to start thinking about the form their project might take in the context of an exhibition, but also at art and photography historians interested in developing a curatorial practice.
The workshop will offer concise theoretical introductions to various exhibition-related themes, such as narration, scenography and the relationship to the visitor, alternating with collective critical analysis of case studies. These concepts will be put into practice in group exercises based on pre-existing bodies of images, which will provide an opportunity to work on concepts such as photographic narrative and the materiality of images. The workshop will be complemented by introductions to the more practical aspects of producing an exhibition, such as production, budgeting and financing, fundraising, etc.
This workshop is led by Danaé Panchaud, director of the Centre de la photographie Genève since 2022. Since 2012, she has curated over 40 exhibitions, primarily in the fields of photography and contemporary art, but also in applied arts and sciences, in a wide range of contexts.
