Since the 1970s, Renate Bertlmann has been exploring the expressive possibilities of a wide variety of photography, installation and performance techniques as an independent artist. She became involved with feminist groups from early on, challenging traditional representations of women and their neglected status in art history. In the 1970s, her four-part series Zärtliche Pantomime (Tender Pantomime)utilised the texture and symbolism of latex condoms and teats. The artist herself can be seen in these photos, sitting on the floor, wearing a black negligee and absorbed in a playful and sexual exploration of these rubber teats, sometimes used as masks for protection from the camera’s gaze.
